Cultural center in Glasgow

"Òran Mór" in Glasgow, Scotland, is much more than just a restaurant - it is a cultural center housed in a former church from 1862 in the heart of the city's West End. The name "Òran Mór", Gaelic for "great song of life" or "great melody", reflects the vision of founder Colin Beattie, who meticulously restored the building from 2002 and opened it as a multifunctional event space in 2004. The impressive neo-Gothic architecture with its Italian pyramid-shaped tower and the breathtaking ceiling fresco in the auditorium by Alasdair Gray, one of Scotland's largest public works of art, make the place a unique experience. The restaurant itself is just one part of the offering, which also includes bars, a nightclub, theater performances, and event spaces, but it stands out with its excellent cuisine.

Scottish cuisine at Òran Mór

Culinary-wise, "Òran Mór" places great emphasis on Scottish ingredients and seasonal freshness, which are used in various areas of the house - the brasserie, the John Muir Room, and the bars. In the brasserie, which stands out with its elegant, art-nouveau-inspired design after a renovation, the "Roast Chicken Supreme" is a highlight: juicy chicken served with a rich sauce and seasonal vegetables that underline the quality of local produce. Also popular is the "Finnan Haddie", a traditional dish made with smoked haddock and creamy mustard sauce that tastes both hearty and refined. For vegetarians, the "Roasted Cauliflower Steak" is a spicy piece of cauliflower served with herbs and a light tahini note, showcasing the creativity of the cuisine here.

The dessert menu is another highlight and often attracts special attention. The "Sticky Toffee Pudding" with its warm, caramel sweetness and a scoop of vanilla ice cream is a classic that perfectly represents the British dessert tradition. Equally tempting is the "Basque Cheesecake" with its caramelized crust and creamy interior, garnished with fresh berries, providing an unforgettable finale. The drinks menu complements the offering with an impressive selection of Scottish whiskies - fitting for the whisky bar on the premises - as well as seasonal cocktails that often incorporate local ingredients like berries or herbs.

Multifunctional event venue Scotland

The restaurant is divided into two main areas: The brasserie offers a more upscale experience with a focus on relaxed yet stylish dining, while the John Muir Room creates a casual atmosphere with views of a beer garden, ideal for a laid-back lunch or a drink. The service is often described as warm and attentive, highlighting the relaxed yet professional atmosphere of the establishment. "Òran Mór" is also known for its versatility - in addition to dining, there is the famous "A Play, A Pie and A Pint" theater, which entertains guests with a short performance, a traditional meat pie, and a drink, as well as regular live music and events that complement the cultural offering.

I went for the fan zone to watch the six nations. Great atmosphere for the rugby but food was a bit cold and bland.

DIFFERANT TYPE OF SPIRIT SERVED IN THIS OLD CHURCH , Seems a thing in glasgow changing old churches to bars ,restaraunts and clubs maybe they felt they keep the flock and save time in repentance ;-) lol .i have not explored the other areas but it totaly has its own featrues throughout ,proper bar area seperating in to varied themed areas . From excellant to slightly pantos themed gimmicks that actually all look correct in place. Plenty of real architecture and paintings too. After all who does not want a goats head staring at you amongst 6 barrels and loads of whiskies while drinking your pint. Beer and prices good, noticed meals coming out seemed reasonable with price max you expect to pay for what they serve.. It a nice place were all types come and go. Definatley worth a vist according to what your after you'll be directed to right part of the place..Service always pleasant, quick as can be but still serve it right.. Went to hear Jan Akkerman. Been on my bucket list for years. Down in the crypt, couldn't have wanted a better place to see him. Great atmosphere, full of friendly people, bar service good. Not totally sure about the Duke which was Glasgow's answer to Guinness!!
